I was Stunned on my trip to Canada

I was in Canada with my g/f who is Costa Rican and was shocked by the difference in culture. I think she was as well, but she didn't realize many of the things as they are not important to her. What stunned me was that people I would talk to asked me what I was doing in Costa Rica. I haven't been keeping up with international news but is Costa Rica really being bashed at an international level? I mean my neighbors/family friends were asking me about saftey down here, like it's some kind of war zone. I know this is not a safe place, but where is? I feel fine, as long as I keep in mind not to walk the hood at 3am.

Anyways my point was, have any of you guys experienced this kind of stuff when visiting back home?

Why are you surprised that people are informed of what a toilet CR has become? What has happened is that word-of-mouth has spread the bad experiences tourists have had on their trips to CR...shit getting stolen, robberies, assaults, negative attitude towards North-Americans, a filthy capital city to name a few.

The high profile murder case of the U. of Kansas student didn't help either.

There are websites blasting CR all over the internet.

I'm not the only one who sees CR for what it truly is.

One life taken is 1 too many. However, if that girl wasn't an American, you wouldn't be hearing about all this fuss.

It's way over blown in the press on the safety in CR. It's dangerous here but not like what it's made out in the news to be.

First of all you guys should grab a Newspaper and inform yourself before opening your mouth and not be telling half of the stories and yes im a costarican and I will have to agree that if this country has become more violent is because all the inmigrants that are coming in from the north and from the south, and at least people here know how to vote and we still elect our presidents.

American...I defy you to find a single country in the world that doesnt bash the US for one reason or another, so thats a pretty weak point...As far as CR being a toilet, well brother I disagree, perhaps if you kept out of Del Rey or similar establishments you might have seen CR for what it REALLY is!!....sorry to hear about the bad case of herpes you got down here...I heard she was a total ape!!

Is that what your communist teachers at UCR are telling you to think? I think CR's main problem is a weak culture. But that's just my opinion. I met all kinds in CR, people from all over Latin-America. I'd go into battle alongside a Nicaraguan or a Columbian before a Tico. Somehow, Costa Ricans seem bitter and materialistic in comparison with other Latin-Americans. I think that the influx of Northamericans had a lot to do with that.

The girl that was murdered was in Golfito. She was a University Student from Kansas. Not into drugs from what I read.

You guys get into it too much here, I am not even going to render an opinion to what you all have to say...bottom line...no matter what country you go there is a level of danger. Some more than others.
My point is, I would think that the CR government, through their tourism department, would diplomatically play the media. You know, the minister of something expresses his sorrow to the family and states that he will do everything in his power to bring the perps to justice. And start making an example of the OIJ's ability to catch criminals. Turn the media around and use it to promote tourism....I've seen it done in Belize, Jamaica, Antigua and a few other places....so I know it's possible....even if the law enforcement agencies aren't really doing anything.
